The Facts about Financial Aid in Today's Society

Tough economic times make a college degree even more valuable than ever, and scholarships and financial aid can help you attain your education. Here are some important facts to keep in mind:

  • More than $66 million in financial assistance was available to UIndy students; about one half of this total was in the form of scholarships and grants from many sources.
  • More than 80 percent of UIndy students receive some form of financial aid.
  • Federal and state scholarships and grants will continue to be awarded in like amounts for 2009-10.
  • UIndy earmarked more than $19 million for scholarships and grants in 2008-09 and our plan is to increase institutional merit- and need-based aid for 2009-10.
  • Stafford Federal Loan limits were increased by $2,000 this year and will be available in the same amounts to any and all U.S. students who need to borrow in 2009-10.
  • Federal PLUS Loans will continue to be available for creditworthy parents up to the full cost of attendance.
  • Families should apply for federal loans first, but supplemental private loans still are available to creditworthy students or parents if needed.

You must take the first step toward receiving financial aid by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.gov no later than March 10, 2009! The UIndy Financial Aid Application [PDF], available from the financial aid office, must be submitted to the University to supplement the FAFSA.
